First ever Hebridean Celtic Festival took place on 18 - 22 June 1996. The 'big tent' on the green hosted the main evening events for a mainly home-based audience. Many remember that first atmospheric first night in the tent which featured the haunting pipes of Davy Spillane and Friday night's big crowd who turned up to hear Wolfstone and were blown away by Canada's rising star Natalie McMaster moonwalking across the stage and Tracey Dares who managed to play piano and step dance at the same time.

The event also ran a series of workshops involving Mats Melin, Rory Campbell, Wendy Stevenson, Jennifer Wrigley and Charlie MacLeod, who also went out to many schools around the island bringing performance and tuition to many areas.
