ISLAND CHARITY BENEFITS FROM GENEROSITY OF HEBCELT FANS

28 Nov 2018

Music fans attending the award-winning Hebridean Celtic Festival have helped support the work of Macmillan Cancer Support to the tune of £14,000 over the last decade.

This year, HebCelt’s association with Macmillan’s Lewis committee reached the ten-year milestone. As the event’s nominated charity, it benefits from annual donations from fans.

Macmillan provide a team of volunteers to support the festival by providing specialist care to disabled festival patrons.  In return festival-goers are able to donate any unused bar tokens and cash to Macmillan at the festival grounds.  This year a collection was also held at the entrance to the free family events in the Town Hall.

The 23rd HebCelt, headlined by Deacon Blue, The Fratellis, Eddi Reader, Roddy Woomble and Skipinnish, was held from 18-21 July in Stornoway and sold out on all four days.

Festival director Caroline Maclennan said: “As a festival firmly rooted in its community, we are proud to be able to give something back to the islands and its people.

“The local Macmillan committee does incredibly valuable work and we are delighted that, through the generosity of festival-goers, we have been able to raise this amount over the last ten years to support them.”

Isla Dewar, area fundraising manager for Macmillan Cancer Support in the North of Scotland, said: “‘I’m hugely grateful to Caroline and her team at HebCelt, for inviting Macmillan Cancer Support to be part of the event every year.

“The festival goers are very generous, and I know our Isle of Lewis Committee volunteers and their hardworking additional helpers thoroughly enjoy being involved.

“We’re all delighted with the total raised to date, which will be used to help people with cancer find their best way through and live life as fully as they can.”
